AI Website Builder vs Professional Web Design
Same AI technology. Same business. Two very different approaches to building a website.
Both websites were created for Wren & Root Garden Care, a fictional gardening business in Leeds. Both were built using Lovable. Version A used a single basic prompt. Version B followed J-SN's structured professional development process.
A controlled demonstration. Wren & Root is not a real business and this is not a customer project. It was set up so the two approaches could be compared fairly.

02 · The business challenge
Building a website is easy. Building the right one takes more thought.
The objective was never simply to make a better-looking gardening website. The professional process asked:
- Who does the business serve?
- What do its customers need?
- Which services should be prioritised?
- How should the brand's personality come across?
- How can the site encourage relevant enquiries?
- How should information be organised for search engines and AI systems?
For Wren & Root, the answers pointed to one clear focus: regular garden maintenance for busy homeowners. Version B leads with that, from its headline onwards.
03 · Behind the scenes
What you don't see makes the difference.
Business and audience strategy
Version B began with structured discovery: who Wren & Root serves, what those customers need, how the business should be positioned and what it needs the website to achieve commercially.
That work led the website to prioritise regular garden maintenance for busy Leeds homeowners — people who want their weekends back — rather than presenting every service with equal weight.
Brand development
The professional version used a deliberate visual identity: a logo, colour palette, typography, imagery direction and brand voice chosen for the business.
Those decisions were then applied consistently across the site, guided by the business rather than left entirely to AI.
Content and conversion strategy
Content followed the AIDA framework — Attention, Interest, Desire, Action. It addresses the customer's problem, explains the services, communicates the benefits and encourages a relevant enquiry.
Version B includes additional relevant content and FAQs. The aim was more purposeful content, not simply a longer website.
SEO and AEO foundations
Professional planning considered relevant search intent, a keyword-focused content structure, semantic HTML, a clear heading hierarchy, metadata, crawlability, clear service descriptions, questions with direct answers, relevant internal navigation and appropriate structured data.
These foundations can help search engines and AI systems access and understand a website's content. Foundational SEO is not the same as a complete keyword optimisation campaign, and none of these measures guarantees rankings, traffic or citations in AI search results.
E-E-A-T and trust
Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness and Trustworthiness. On a real website, genuine reviews, experience, credentials, case studies and accurate business information can support credibility, so they are considered during professional planning.
Wren & Root is fictional, so no reviews, qualifications, awards or business results were invented. E-E-A-T is not a standalone score or a guaranteed ranking factor.
Content management
The professional website is designed to include a content management system for routine changes, so agreed existing text and images can be edited without repeatedly prompting an AI builder. This can reduce ongoing reliance on AI credits.
Not every DIY builder charges credits for every change.
Professional quality assurance
The professional process includes technical testing. Version B initially scored 69 for mobile performance — the same score the basic AI version reached. Testing identified image and loading optimisations, and after targeted improvements it achieved 92.
Improvements like these are not necessarily visible in screenshots.
04 · Technical results
The numbers behind the websites.
Basic AI · Mobile performance
69/100
Professional · Mobile performance
92/100
69 is the basic AI score. Version B initially scored the same; professional optimisation improved it to 92.

A note on the SEO score
The published Lighthouse SEO scores were 100 for Basic AI and 69 for Professional.
Because Wren & Root is fictional, the professional version deliberately tells search engines not to index it ("noindex"). Lighthouse flags that restriction, which lowers the score.
A technical SEO score and actual search engine optimisation are different things. This experiment did not measure search rankings, keyword performance or AI-search visibility.
